Clear is the right call for most operators. Tint is worth paying for in one specific situation: the machine works sun-facing daylight hours and almost never runs at dawn, dusk, or after dark. Tint costs roughly $200–$350 more per windshield, adds zero impact protection, and — because the color is molded into the sheet — can't be undone if you don't like it.

The Short Answer
Buy clear unless you can answer yes to all three of these:
- The machine runs mostly in open daylight — pasture, fencerow, roadside, gravel pit, farm ground — not under canopy.
- Your operators face into low sun for long stretches and complain about glare or eye fatigue.
- The machine almost never works at dawn, dusk, night, or inside buildings.
If any one of those is a no, clear is the safer buy. Tint is a comfort upgrade, not a protection upgrade — the polycarbonate underneath is identical either way.
What "Tinted" Actually Means on a Polycarbonate Windshield
On a Forestry Doors windshield, tinted means the color is embedded in the polycarbonate itself, not a film applied to the surface. That matters for a machine that lives in brush: there is no film edge to peel, no bubbling under heat, and nothing that can be scraped off by a limb or a squeegee. It also means the tint is permanent — you can't strip it off in November when the days get short.
The standard offering is 50% tint, which is a visible light transmission (VLT) figure: roughly half the daylight passes through. In automotive terms that's a light-to-medium tint. It is nowhere near "limo" territory — dark automotive films run 20% or 5% VLT — but in a skid steer cab, where the front glass is the only thing between you and the work, 50% is more noticeable than it sounds. Solar gray tinted polycarbonate sheet is commonly specified at about 50% light transmission in industrial glazing, and it also cuts a meaningful share of infrared — the part of sunlight that actually heats the cab.
Terminology you'll see on product pages
- VLT (visible light transmission) — the percentage of visible light that passes through. Lower number = darker panel.
- Embedded tint — pigment mixed into the polycarbonate sheet before forming. Permanent, scratch-proof, no film.
- Hard coat / abrasion-resistant coating — a surface coating applied after forming for scratch resistance. Applied to both clear and tinted panels alike.
- IR rejection — how much heat-carrying infrared is blocked. This is what makes a tinted cab cooler, not the visible darkness.
What Tint Does — and Doesn't — Do
Most bad tint purchases come from believing one of the middle rows in this table.

When Tint Is the Right Choice
Tint earns its money in a narrow set of conditions. If your operation looks like one of these, buy it and don't look back.
- Open-ground daytime work. Pasture and fencerow mowing, roadside mowing, gravel and aggregate yards, feedlots, farm ground. Wide-open sky, no canopy, sun in the face half the day.
- Single-shift daylight machines. If the machine goes in the shed at 5 p.m. and never comes back out until morning, you never pay the low-light penalty.
- South- and west-facing repetitive passes. Mowing the same direction for hours is the classic eye-fatigue complaint, and the one tint reliably solves.
- Cabs where the A/C is already losing. Cutting infrared through the largest pane in the cab takes real load off a marginal A/C system in July.
- Operators who won't wear sunglasses. Sounds trivial. It isn't — an operator squinting all afternoon is a slower, more fatigued operator.
When Clear Is the Right Choice
Clear is the default for a reason. Buy clear if any of the following apply:
- You work dawn, dusk, or after dark. This is the single biggest source of tint regret. Operators consistently report that dawn and dusk are harder than full darkness, because in full dark you're running work lights anyway — at twilight you're relying on ambient light that tint has already cut in half.
- You work under canopy. Forestry mulching and timber clearing happen in shade. Adding tint to a shaded environment costs you contrast exactly where you need to pick a stem out of a background.
- Ground crew works near the machine. Spotting a person in shadow beside the machine is a safety-critical task, and it gets harder as VLT drops.
- It's a rental or multi-operator machine. A rental fleet windshield has to satisfy every customer, including the one who shows up at 5 a.m. in November. Clear is the universal spec.
- You run indoors, in barns, or in demolition. Interior work is low-light work.
- Cost matters more than comfort. That $200–$350 buys a rear window and side panels on some machines — arguably better money spent than darkening the front.
Don't Trade Thickness for Tint
This is the mistake that actually costs money. Thickness determines how much impact the panel takes; tint determines how much light gets through. They are unrelated, and one is a safety spec while the other is a comfort spec.
If your budget only covers one upgrade, and the machine runs a brush cutter, drum mulcher, or grapple saw, buy the thickness. Tinted and clear panels are built to the same OEM form and fit, so the tint choice does not change fitment. What changes fitment is your machine's model, generation, and serial number — always confirm those before ordering.

The Wacker Neuson line is a good reminder of why serial numbers matter: two different OEM glass numbers cover the ST/SW range, split at a serial break, and your OEM number and serial range have to match the same row before you order. Lead times can differ between clear and tinted
Tinted panels and thinner panels don't always ship on the same schedule as the standard clear stock item. Lead times are posted on each product page and can vary by thickness — check the page for your machine before you plan the swap around a job. If the machine is down and you need it moving this week, availability may make the decision for you.
Installation: No Difference in the Work, One Difference in the Prep
Installing a tinted windshield is identical to installing a clear one. Same OEM mounting holes, same milled edges, same wiper motor and handle locations, same bonding methods. Nothing about the tint changes the procedure — walk through the Forestry Doors installation guide the same way either way.
Two practical notes worth knowing before the panel comes out of the box:
- Protective masking hides the tint. Polycarbonate ships with masking film on both faces. Tinted panels look dramatically darker with the film on than they will on the machine — don't judge the tint (or panic) until the masking is off.
- Add the door seal if the frame calls for it. Several windshields offer an optional seal — for example, the Bobcat and John Deere skid steer door seals at $79.95. A tinted panel in a leaking frame is still a leaking frame.
If you're bonding rather than bolting, the bond method matters more than the panel color. 3M VHB 5952 tape ($26.99) is the fast route; primerless urethane is the fully sealed route. Don't substitute hardware-store double-stick for either one.

One more thing worth doing: if you go tinted on the front, keep the rear and side panels clear. Rear and side polycarbonate for these machines is typically supplied clear anyway, and leaving them clear preserves the visibility you need for backing up and spotting. You get the glare relief where you're looking into the sun, and full light everywhere else.

Is a tinted polycarbonate windshield stronger than a clear one?
No. Impact resistance comes from the polycarbonate and its thickness, not the color. A 1/2" tinted panel and a 1/2" clear panel offer the same protection. If you want more protection, go thicker or step up to a heavy-duty frame — don't go darker.

Not always. Tint availability varies by machine and thickness — the Bobcat M Series tinted windshield, for instance, is currently listed in 1/2" only. Check the thickness selector on the product page for your machine, and call us if the combination you want isn't showing.
Does the tint change installation or fitment?
No. Tinted and clear panels are formed to the same OEM shape with the same milled edges and duplicated mounting holes, so fitment and installation are identical. Confirm your model, generation, and serial number — that's what determines fitment, not the color.
Should I tint the rear and side windows too?
Usually not. Rear and side polycarbonate panels — such as the Kubota SVL rear window and side windows — are typically supplied clear, and there's a good reason to leave them that way: you need light and contrast for backing up and spotting people beside the machine. Tint where the sun is; stay clear everywhere else.
What about my rental fleet — tinted or clear?
Clear. A rental machine has to work for every customer, including the one running it before sunrise. Clear is the universal spec, and it's the one that never generates a complaint call.

Tinted and clear windshields protect your operator exactly the same. The only thing tint changes is how much light reaches the seat — which makes this a work-hours question, not a safety question. Open-ground daytime machines with sun-fatigued operators are the case where tint is worth $200–$350. Everything else — forestry under canopy, rentals, multi-operator machines, and anything that runs at dawn, dusk, or after dark — should be clear.
